Poland is a popular shopping destination for foreign tourists and business travelers.
One of the main reasons is the opportunity to get back a portion of the amount paid as Value Added Tax (VAT). This procedure, known as Tax Free, allows shoppers to save up to 23% on their purchases. In this article, we’ll explain what the Tax Free system is, who is eligible for a VAT refund in Poland, what conditions must be met, and how to get your money back.
What is the Tax Free system?
Tax Free is a VAT refund mechanism available in many European Union countries, including Poland. It is designed for non-EU citizens. The purpose of the program is to refund the VAT included in the price of goods when those goods are exported outside the EU.
The VAT rate in Poland ranges from 5% to 23%, depending on the category of goods. When purchasing from sellers participating in the Tax Free program, non-EU residents can reclaim the VAT.
Who is eligible for a VAT refund from Poland?
The following are eligible for VAT refunds:
Individuals officially residing outside the European Union (e.g. citizens of Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Norway, the UK after Brexit, and others).
Tourists temporarily staying in Poland for leisure, shopping, medical treatment, or business trips.
Companies from third countries, if the goods are not used in Poland and are exported outside the EU (through intermediaries).
Note: EU citizens are not eligible for VAT refunds under the Tax Free system.
